What is C.I.T.E?

C.I.T.E is the Certificate for International Teachers of English awarded by Anglia Examinations England. The qualification is designed to provide English language teachers with international recognition of their skills, knowledge and experience in the English language and in language teaching.

C.I.T.E functions in the same way as any other standardised English language qualification, with a specific purpose — in this case, English language teaching. It is recognised by educational institutions and language schools in over fifty countries.

For full programme details, visit the Anglia Examinations England official website: anglia.org/cite.

The C.I.T.E certificate has no expiration date. Once awarded, the qualification remains valid for your entire career.

Entry criteria for the C.I.T.E test

No prior qualifications are required to enter the C.I.T.E test. Although you may already hold other teaching or language qualifications, none of them are a prerequisite. The C.I.T.E exam is open to:

  • Practising English language teachers seeking a formal international qualification
  • Students and trainee teachers preparing for a future career in English language teaching
  • Language professionals who wish to validate their teaching knowledge
Section 03

What level of English do you need?

Teaching English requires a strong command of the language. Because teaching young learners and teaching higher levels or adults requires different competencies — both in theory and in practice — candidates can choose between two versions of the C.I.T.E test.

Minimum B2 · CEFR

C.I.T.E — Young Learners

Tailored for teachers working with primary and early-years learners. Candidates must hold at least a B2 level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Minimum C1 · CEFR

C.I.T.E — General Teaching

For teachers of older learners and adults. Candidates must hold at least a C1 level of English (CEFR) and demonstrate knowledge of grammatical terms, language functions and classroom English.
